Our standard eye examinations
Everyone we see will receive a standard eye examination. Some people can have this funded under the NHS. We may also need to add to or alter the examination for children and people with certain conditions.
NHS: Are you eligible?

Some people can have their eye examination free of charge under the NHS. To see if you’re eligible please click here.

Children's examinations

The test may vary for children, for example if they’re too young to read or recognise letters. You can see more about our eye examinations for children here.

Advanced examinations

Some people with certain conditions, for example glaucoma, may need a more advanced examination. You can see more about our advanced examinations here.

What you can expect

During your examination, we’ll check the general health of your eyes and test your vision. Before you see our optometrist, our team will:

Take measurements and images of your eyes
These help the optometrist check the health of your eyes and give the most accurate results should you need a prescription for glasses. We also offer the an OCT, a scan of the retina, or using advanced imaging with Optomap. It helps the optometrist in ensuring good eye health. Please note that opticians and hospital services do not share raw clinical data and for this those who are being monitored for AMD or other ocular conditions, we do advise you still opt for the scans. This allows the optometrist to monitor changes in between those periods and give the most appropriate advice.
Check your current glasses.
We’ll check the prescription, coatings and treatments of your current glasses. This will help us to decide what changes, if any, you need. We’ll also make sure your glasses are in good condition and fit you as they should.
If necessary, check the internal pressure of your eyes.
This helps us detect glaucoma. We usually do this with a puffer test but do have another means of testing (Goldmann applanation) which is done after anaesthetic drops are put in your eye. The pressure test gives us an overall indication of how the eyes are doing and helps rule out other concerns.
If necessary, carry out a visual field test
We do this to measure your peripheral vision and give the optometrist information about the pathways between your eyes and brain.
After which..
You will then spend time with our optometrist who will carry out your eye examination. You will be informed about any concerns they may have about your vision or eye health and review the history we have on record for you.
Expert advice with unlimited choice

If you do need glasses the OVC team will be able to give you expert advice on which lenses would be best for you. The right lenses will help give you the best possible vision and make sure your glasses are comfortable to wear.

We are an independent optician so are not limited by any particular brands or promotions. This means you can be confident we will only recommend the lenses we believe will best suit your needs.

It is a legal requirement that before we can supply contact lenses and do an accurate fitting of lenses that you have an up to date eye examination.   Our contact lens examination takes measurements of the anterior part of the eye and will use an orange dye to help assess the best lenses suited for you.

“Fabulous opticians. Best eye examination I have ever had in over 60 years of wearing spectacles. It was very personalised to me and the optician cared about my vision and explained any concerns that I had. The dispensing optician showed me a wide variety of frames of varying prices. I did not feel rushed in to making my choice of frames and varifocals. They took more measurements than has been done anywhere else, so when I collected them they fitted perfectly and I only took a short time to adjust to my new glasses.
I can certainly recommend this opticians for giving the best quality service and have told all my family and friends about them” Granny Sue
